Looney Choons @ RTRFM 92.1 - 7 May 2010 download Whenever I visit Perth, I make a point of going up to the RTR studio for Looney Choons. It's good fun playing music in there, it's just a nice and quiet room with a good soundsystem and a city full of listeners - night owls, clubbers, people driving home. Years ago we would regularly get calls from two bakers who were listening, presumably whilst baking. I've got a few recordings from back then. It's a fantastic station with many good shows - Underground Solution was and is my favourite radio show. I went back there recently and it remains as fun as ever. This recording is made up of all sorts of dance music I've been enjoying in the last year (and a couple of cheesy advertisments for tickets to see Mick Malthouse).  | not sure | |||

Cross My Mind download A little while ago someone asked me to make a mix for their birthday. I decided to try making a computer mix. It's pretty fun, so I made another one, for public consumption. This mix goes around the way from nice summery jazz, folk and r+b, to some pleasant electronic and ambient, and picks up the pace towards the end. Hiphop mix 2005 download I started to get into hiphop thanks to Prefuse73. If you don't like rapping/MCing, he doesn't really have much of that. It's mostly instrumental and cut up samples, which makes it easy to listen to if you don't really 'get' MCing. After a while I really started to appreciate hip hop with words, thanks to Madvillain (my pick for the greatest hiphop album ever, thankyou). Eventually I decided to try making a whole mix with hiphop. Coming from a house and techno background, I don't know how to scratch, so I just tried to make each tune move into the next smoothly. I think I did a good job (even though it turned out to be mostly Prefuse, Madlib and Ammoncontact). I should do another one of these. Insomnia Mix download I can't quite remember why I called this mix Insomnia Mix, but I think it was along the lines of 'these tunes would be nice to hear late at night'. Or perhaps I just called it that because it contains a tune called 'Insomnia in dub'. It certainly wasn't because I thought it would be good to listen to if you wanted to fall asleep. I don't know what sort of music would actually work for that. This mix is quite relaxing though, nice slowed down beats, a little bit jazzy, and not very long - only 40 minutes. Advanced Engines download Advanced Engines was a techno gig in Perth that was fantastic in many ways. I think I met quite a few friends for the first time at that gig. After a while they put on another one, Advanced Engines 2, which had a few German techno guys come and play live, I think Heiko Laux was one. I was pretty pleased to be asked to DJ at it, and spent quite a bit of time going through my records beforehand to pick lots of great tunes that would work on a dancefloor. The set turned out great, one of my friends said it was the set of the night (which made me pretty pleased). I wish I'd recorded it then, but instead, I woke up the next day and decided to try and recreate it. This is always a mixed bag, in that it's good to go back and listen to the tunes and remember the gig, but it's never going to be the same. I think this recording does it justice for the most part. Try and imagine the first song being mixed into Derrick May's Kaotic Harmony - the last tune from my friend James. This one starts off with a really nice tune from Morr Music, very melodic, and then continues in the melodic techno vein. There's one fantastic old Clear tune on there at about 22 minutes, by Metamatics, which was one of the first underground dance music records I ever heard, on Ben Stinga's show. Minimal Exposure 25 March 2006 download I'm not sure, but I think this was the first Minimal Exposure. This is a techno / electronic music night at the Velvet Lounge once a month on a Saturday night, and as such, is one of the few / only regular music nights in Perth worth going to. It's certainly the only techno night I'm aware of. I was so excited about this night starting up, I chose some great unusual tunes to play, starting off with Ryoji Ikeda's Dataplex, Battles' epic remix of Fourtet, Ammoncontact, and then going all over the techno / house realm, with a little broken beat thrown in. It ended up sounding pretty good, I think. Quantum Lounge Radio download part 1 download part 2 Nic Tan ran an internet radio station in Perth for a while, called the Quantum Lounge. It's now defunct, but it was awesome, with sets from many Perth DJs of all sorts of musical tastes, and also music from DJs from around the world. I did a massive two hour set of my favourite music, which is mostly soulful glitchy electronic stuff. And then I lost the second CD. If anyone has this, let me know. I want it.
